Michelle Sencion
Hello, my name is Michelle Sencion, I am 18 years old and a New York City native. My background is solely Hispanic as my family is from a small island country called the Dominican Republic. Growing up in the city can be a very culturally rich experience as a child. I remember the many trips me and my mother took to visit my great-grandmother in Brooklyn. Those were my first glimpses into a completely different culture. I became aware of the African American community for the very first time. Since I was raised in a mainly Hispanic community, I rarely encountered any black people. In high school, I made some great friendships with people who are African American. Through these friendships I experienced my first bout of not-so-subtle racism. An old white lady would rather stand in a crowded train than sit next to us. It was a very upsetting experience and it made me realize that there is a very big social imbalance that is affecting people of color. I decided to address these issues in my writing because I was greatly affected after the murders of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. I write my pieces because I realized that this was not an issue only in the African American community, this is an issue that affects all people of color. There is a level of prejudice and discrimination that I never thought I would actually experience. I am very passionate about bringing justice to those whose voices have been muffled. It makes me cringe to witness any kind of social injustice against another individual. I strongly believe that I was born to be a person of color. I was born to know what discrimination feels like so I can take a stand against it, and educate others on how to do so as well. I hope you enjoy mine and my colleagues work.
