MagDALENA oROPEZA
My name is Magdalena Oropeza, I am 18 years old and I would consider myself to be a Mexican New Yorker. Growing up I lived in a typical Mexican home, hearing wonderful stories of my native land from my mother. As I got older the stories died down and my mother no longer talked about Mexico the same way, but I never really understood why. As the years passed on I grew up and moved on to high school due to the constant support of my parents to continue my education. During my years there I embraced my culture even more than ever before not because it was welcomed, but because of the constant microaggressions I faced in high school due to the fact that I was Mexican. I constantly had to prove to myself and to everyone that I did deserve to be sitting in the seat I was in. My high school years came and went, then I finally moved on to college.
Once I entered through the front doors I knew that it was going to be different, and that I had finally found a place where I could be myself. College is the place where I am able to express my ideas, talk about anything that came to my mind, and feel like I actually deserved to be sitting in my seat. It is also the place where I combined my love for sociology and criminal justice, as well as my want to learn more about my Latina/o community. Through that same love and want, I created the writings that you will see on this website, and I was finally able to know why my mother, who once called Mexico a beautiful place to grow up now calls it a barren wasteland. Now I know change is inevitable. Change is constant. |
