the movement
#BlackLivesMatter is what most would call an activist movement. It was born through social injustice and raised by the internet. Social media has played a huge role in the communication between the movement and those who may not know what it is about. #BlackLivesMatter is live and active on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, and a personal website. They continuously shine light on issues that are happening to the African American community in different parts of the United States. Through the use of all these social media websites, they are able to project their voices so that it can reach a wider audience. They realize that by being actively involved in social media, they make it easy for everyone to learn and actively participate in issues they are interested in.
#BlackLivesMatter is a movement created by three African American women. It was created shortly after the murder of Trayvon Martin in 2012. It has proven to be one of the most influential movements to hit the new social media age. It has contributed to bringing back discussions about race, equality and has put the not-so-subtle racism, experienced by African Americans all over the U.S., back on the map. Through the use of various social media websites, they have managed to shed some light on important racial injustices ranging from as big as Michael Brown’s murder to local movements and protests. #BlackLivesMatter may very well be the mecca for all social media activists who have come into contact with the famous hashtag.
