The missing 43: Mexico's Disappeared Students 

This documentary by VICE News shows a closer look into the gruesome events that took place on September 26, 2014. Testimony from the survivors, parents of the missing students, and other people involved shed a light as to why protests have become so intense to the point that many protesters are now setting fire to government buildings in Guerrero.   

Mexico Hit By Unrest 

  • There has been nothing but unrest in Mexico.
  • The mayor who ordered the attacks has been arrested and has made no statement. 
  • Protesters have blocked off roads, burned down government buildings in Guerrero, seized town halls, shut down airports, and even hijacked a food delivery truck. 
  • The unrest of the people could further cripple an already slow moving Mexican economy.
  • The reformist image of the president is gone.
  • Controversies surround the president such as the reason he is working so slowly in implementing laws that could benefit Mexico or improving public education.  
  • The president's biggest mistake was in handling the aftermath of the disappearances. He took 11 days to make a comment, his attorney general gave the people their battle cry, and he escaped to Asia amidst the turmoil in Mexico.
  • During his presidency, Enrique Pena Nieto has left behind a Mexico still separated between the have's and have not's, a 2% crime solving rate, and corruption that still goes unpunished. 

Plan Mexico 

  • Plan Mexico began in 2007, under the Bush administration to stop the flow of drugs, but the actual usage of the money is up to the discretion of whoever is in power.
  • This has currently cost tax payers $2.4 billion. 
  • Under the Obama administration, $115 million more has been asked for the 2015 fiscal year. 
  • Apart from these funds, additional funds are given to Mexico by the DEA, FBI, and ATF. 
  • In all of its totality, since 2008, the United States has given Mexico $3 billion dollars to "fight drugs." What is the outcome?
  • Since the creation of Plan Mexico there have been more than 100,000 murdered, 25,000 disappeared, too many mass graves to count, and a numerous amount of human rights violations.  
  • The spike of homicide rates went up around the same year Plan Mexico began.
  • Yet drug use has not changed.

The mission

  • The number one priority of this movement is to gain justice for the 43 students that were taken away from their loved ones. 
  • Everybody is participating in the fight for social justice, all around the world. 
  • People are using money from their own pockets to make videos and websites supporting the cause. 
  • The cry for social justice is supposed to reach every corner of the world, not only to help Mexico but to empower people to stand up against their government if necessary.
  • There are nine different orders the #yamecanse campaign is asking for: 
  1. The safe return of the 43 students. 
  2. Punishment and political justice to those responsible for the horror. 
  3. An end to the terrorism and violence that goes on within Mexico. 
  4. The return of the missing bodies of Granaderos 
  5. Punishment and justice to those who violate human rights. 
  6. A better public education system in rural areas.
  7. The immediate release of all political prisoners 
  8. To decriminalize protesting and social movements especially those fueled by students. 
  9. Finally, to respect people that are only exercising their political and human rights. 

El dolor y la esperanza

Después del masacre de Ayotzinapa muchos protestaron, especialmente los jóvenes. El gobierno de México ahora esta esperando por un milagro que pare la crisis. Para poder entender lo que paso ese día primero tenemos que entender las personas involucradas. Los estudiantes fueron ese día para protestar Maria de los Angeles Pineda de Abarca, la esposa del presidente municipal. Ella viene de una familia ligada al narcotrafico, mientras su esposo subio de un vendedor de sombreros a un presidente municipal. La escuela de los 43 estudiantes, La Normal Rural de Ayotzinapa, fue hecha para crear futuros maestros que normalmente venían de pobresa. Es una de las pocas maneras que existen para que muchos estudiantes se salgan de la pobresa. El ejercito que ataco los estudiantes hace tiempo tuvo muchas violaciones de derechos humanos y han estado involucrados en secuestros. La combinación de toda esta gente resulto en una noche que siempre vivirá en infamia. Como resultado mucha gente esta buscando por respuestas y que el gobierno se haga responsable. México con su historia de muchos muertos va a necesitar muchisimo trabajo para cambiar, va a ser el comienzo de una nueve etapa.     

Reflexiones sobre la tierra mexicana

Esta tragedia ha puesto de manifiesto que el estado de México ha sido un protagonista en múltiples crímenes y después de esta tragedia nada volverá a ser lo mismo. Durante todos estos años se han producido múltiples estadísticas sobre el número de personas que han sido afectados por crimenes cometidos por pandillas locales o las fuerzas de la policía local. Lo que no hemos podido ver es que estas personas no son sólo números, son personas reales que sus vidas fueron destrozadas por breves interacciones. La raíz de este mal inherente que existe en México proviene de las personas que tienen malas intenciones en el interior, pero actúan y se parecen como personas respetables en el exterior. Hay acciones que serían consideradas mal porque comprometen los valores fundamentales y pone en riesgo el equilibrio de la sociedad , la vida y los derechos humanos fundamentales. Estos son el tipo de personas y acciones que al final eran responsable de los hechos que ocurrieron el 26 de septiembre de 2014. Reflexionando sobre el mal inherente que se encuentra en México podría ayudarnos a encontrar una solución. Este es el único momento que podemos componer México y tomar acciones que ayudarán a salvar a nuestra familia, comunidad y país. Un nuevo México es posible, uno con un futuro brillante.
